My services include consultation sessions with families or organizations for a single visit plus follow up or on a consistent schedule. During my visits I am prepared to work with the family and staff towards creating individualized communication strategies for consumer(s) that work for each family or setting.
My qualifications include eight years experience as a deafblind Intervenor and communication facilitator. During my career, my goal was to seek out individuals with the most complex and challenging multiple disabilities that affect communication.
The range of clients I provided services for include individuals with brain injuries who were nearly unresponsive to their environment, individuals with combined vision and hearing loss and individuals who had become locked-in due to a loss of movement. These disabilities had a significant impact on the individuals' awareness of the world or their ability to interact with it and the people around them. However, with carefully planned team interventions each of these individuals has managed to acquire a form of communication which enabled them to take some control over their environment. I believe that all individuals have the ability to communicate, make choices and participate in all aspects of their day.
My
areas of strength include:
-Language and communication development
-Creative choice making strategies
-Concept development
-Creating a
reactive environment
-Custom cue systems
-Sensory stimulation
-Anxiety reduction
-Inclusion strategies
-Adapted life skills
-Developing personalised assistive technology
Through these and other strategies, my goal has always been to facilitate the highest quality of life for the individuals who I provided services to.
I have also developed a large number of creative communication tools which can be found on my volunteer web projects at www.CreativeExpressionsWeb.ca and www.DeafblindResources.org.
